Aristo Nuclear Radiation Slide Rule 10174. It is as if the slide rule came straight from a Cold War Time Capsule. The slide rule is nearly as it was when it left the factory. The 10174 is an interesting, unusual slide rule, evidently designed to help determine levels of protection from radiation or to determine levels of exposure from various sources of nuclear radiation. There are very small scratches on the rule and cursor, but one must look closely to see them.
The slide movement is a little stiffer than most Aristo rules; applying silicone lube will undoubtedly remedy the stiffness, and silicone lube is recommended. The outer case is in very good-to-excellent condition. The case has the original distributor's label still affixed: Kahl Scientific Instruments Corp.
The instructions, unfortunately, have been lost over the years. The original inspection slip (#107) is included, and is also in nearly-new condition. The inspection slip has a light crease not visible in the photograph. The Aristo 10174 is a fascinating slide rule. Lacking instructions, we have only partially deciphered it.
The scale markings are (our translations): Strahlenschutz-Rechenschieber // Radiation Protection Slide Rule. Wahrscheinlichkeit // Dosage Constant or Emission probability. Gauge marks for various radionuclides Na24, etc. Halbwertzeiten // Number of half-absorption thicknesses or half-life times.
Dosisleistung // Dosage rate (per hour). Photoenfluß pro cm2 min // Photoflux per square centimeter per minute. Sekunden Minuten Stunden Tage Jahre // Seconds Minutes Hours Days Years.
The cursor has markings corresponding to various radionuclides Co60 etc. Or to particle energies measured in MeV. These markings evidently relate to the curves on the stator that are marked for different absorbers: Blei Eisen Alu Beton Wasser // Lead Iron Aluminum Concrete Water. No purchaser has ever reported damage to a slide rule in transit.
